While an undergraduate at Harvard, John Alden Carpenter composed the music for several Hasty Pudding shows, including Branglebrink. Among his compositions for voice are volumes of children's songs written with his wife, Rue Winterbotham Carpenter, and settings of Verlaine, Langston Hughes, Siegfried Sassoon, and Rabindrananth Tagore. His orchestral tone poem Sea Drift (1933) takes its inspiration from the Sea-Shore Memories section of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.
